SPX Cooling Technologies - Sound Attenuator Validation Testing
Intro:
This is a practical senior group design project with total five mechanical engineering students, Ethan Henry, Jacob Harman, Jacob Ewers, Brandon Douglas, Quincy Mitchell, and me. This project is also advised by professor Spaulding Gregory, cooperated and sponsored by SPX Technologies. We assumed to design this project from Sep, 2014 to May, 2015.

Project Scope Statement:
Project Objectives:
To design and alternative cooling tower sound attenuation setup that increasing sound attenuation while improving or holding constant cost and thermal performance.
Product Scope Definition:
We will be working air inlet and outlet attenuator geometry, spacing and other design improvement opportunities. The primary application for the product is the “Marley NC Cooling Tower”
Project Requirements:
The design will decrease sound by 3dB and/or decrease cost by 30% and/or decrease pressure drop by 30%. The design must be tested and guaranteed within decibels per CTI Standard ATC 128. Cost analysis and pressure calculations will be completed as well.
Project Deliverables:
Project Constraints:
Project must be completed by the end of the 2014-2015 school year. The proposed design must fit on current Marley NC Cooling Tower.

Project Deliverables:
- Technical publication research that describes attenuator technology and how to reduce sound. Investigation of attenuator manufacturers and sound absorption industry to understand the current state of the art and available product offerings.
- Creation of a test chamber(s) for evaluation of various attenuator arrangements to confirm sound insertion loss and air flow pressure drop. SPX will provide one baseline and one alternate arrangement for testing. The design group is encouraged to devise others.
- Test data from of the various configurations
- Cost estimates of the various configurations
- Proposed optimization of the design to replace current arrangement.
Project Constraints:
