Intro:
This engineering design is a typical project in my Machine Design class, which is more concentrate on Define The Problem, Gather Pertinent Information, Generate Multiple Solutions and Analyze A Solution, especially the portion of calculation.

Problem:
Spur Gear Design Project
A pair of spur gears with 20°, full-depth teeth is to be designed as part of the drive for a wood-chipper to cut pulpwood for use in a paper mill. The power source is an electric motor that drives the pinion at 1750 rpm. The gear must rotate between 460 and 465 rpm. The gears must transmit 3.0 hp. A compact design is desired, but in no case can the center distance exceed 5.0 inches. The chipper system is expected to run one 8-hour shift per day (5 days per week) for 3 years at a reliability of 90% before an overhaul. Once you have completed your design, provide a final discussion of your work (assumptions, decisions, results, etc) and what could be changed in your design to possibly improve it.
Please realize that you must make decisions and assumptions on parameters in this project (especially to get started) and your solution may have to be iterative. Clearly state all assumptions.
Your solution must be neat and organized. Points will be deducted for sloppy, illegible, unorganized work.
1. Define The Problem

After reading and analyzing the problem, I extract those data
from original problems.
2. Gather Pertinent Information
Since I am studying Machine Design, the most data and information is from the textbook such us formulas, sketches, diagrams, charts and methods. Some samples are showed above.
3. Generate Multipel Solutions

After massive calculations on computer, I generate few possible engineering designs on Excel. As showed above.
4. Analyze Multiple Solutions

As I mentioned on my personal definition of engineering design. I have to find a proper design which is the best balance point to meet all requirements. Then, I generate and select the best solution on the figure right.
5. Test And Implement The Solution

Since the limitation of experiment condition. I didn't take actual test to redesign and revise. In stead I draw the simulate sketch on Solidworks.
Conclusion:
After massive calculation and physics application. First, I realized every engineering design should base on ample knowledge and rich experiences. Second, every engineering design should be accurate, and treat seriously even just two gears. Third, a proper solution often base on numerous calculation and test. At last, since the limitation of experiment condition, this engineering design is not ready to finish.
